Allah give thee grace! why didst thou grant them until those who told the truth were seen by thee in a clear light, and thou hadst proved the liars?
The Arabic expression ʿafā Allāhu ʿanka literally means “May God set your affairs aright.” Although the phrase is often used in contexts where a person has committed an error or wrongdoing, it can also be applied in situations where no fault is involved. In such cases, it functions as an idiomatic expression conveying goodwill, affection, or respect. For example, it may be addressed to someone held in high regard as a form of prayer or blessing, expressing the wish that God grant them honor and well-being. Some reports relate that when two hypocrites from Madinah presented excuses for not participating in the expedition of Tabūk, the Prophet Muhammad responded with this expression, using it to convey kindness and compassion despite the circumstances (as described in classical Islamic commentary).
