90:8
Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?-
90:9
And a tongue, and a pair of lips?-
The eyes grant us the ability to see, which can be understood both literally and metaphorically. Similarly, the tongue provides the ability to taste in both senses. Along with the lips, it also allows us to speak, seek information, ask for guidance, and praise Allah..
90:10
And shown him the two highways?
The two paths of life are: the steep and challenging path of virtue, which is further detailed in the following verses, and the easier path of vice and the rejection of Allah, as mentioned in verses 19-20 below. Allah has granted us not only the faculties symbolized by the eyes, tongue, and lips but also the judgment to choose our path. Additionally, He has sent Teachers and Guides, along with Revelation, to show us the correct and difficult way.
90:11
But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep.
Despite the faculties Allah has bestowed upon man and the guidance He has provided, man has been negligent. He has not shown a strong desire to follow the steep and difficult path that is for his own spiritual benefit. This is comparable to Matthew 7:14: “Strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”
90:12
And what will explain to thee the path that is steep? –
90:13
(It is:) freeing the bondman.
90:14
Or the giving of food in a day of privation
90:15
To the orphan with claims of relationship,
90:16
Or to the indigent (down) in the dust.
90:17
Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin
deeds of kindness and compassion.
