The contrast between even and odd numbers is a subject of scholarly debate among those who study the properties of numbers. Regardless, even and odd numbers follow each other in a regular succession: each is independent, yet neither is self-sufficient. Ultimately, every even number is composed of two odd ones. All things exist in pairs, as referenced in 36:36 and note 3981. In the animal world, pairs consist of two individuals, each complementing the other. Both abstract and concrete concepts are often understood in contrast to their opposites. Why, then, should we not approach spiritual matters with the same perspective, understanding this life in relation to the Hereafter? And why should we reject belief in the Hereafter simply because we cannot conceive of anything beyond our present existence?
