Remember ye implored the assistance of your Lord, and He answered you: “I will assist you with a thousand of the angels, ranks on ranks.”

According to historical reports, during the Battle of Badr the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) prayed earnestly to God, saying: “O Lord, fulfill what You have promised. O Allah, if this small group of Your servants is destroyed, You will not be worshipped on earth.” This supplication is recorded in major hadith collections such as Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. The Qur’anic verse referring to divine assistance was revealed in connection with this moment of supplication (al-Bukhārī; Muslim, as cited in modern commentary).

Some interpreters suggest that the Qur’anic reference to “help with a thousand angels” should be understood metaphorically rather than literally. According to this interpretation, the Qur’an does not explicitly state that angels physically fought in the battle. Instead, the assistance of angels is understood as spiritual support that strengthened the resolve of the Muslim forces, who were significantly outnumbered and less equipped than the Makkan army. At the same time, this divine support is described as instilling fear and uncertainty in the hearts of their opponents, thereby contributing to the eventual outcome of the battle.
