85:1
By the sky, (displaying) the Zodiacal Signs;
Verses 1-3 present an appeal to three signs, while the substantive proposition in verses 4-8 condemns the wicked persecutors of Allah’s followers, those who burned righteous men for their faith. The three signs are: the glorious sky, marked by the broad belt of constellations representing the twelve signs of the zodiac; the Day of Judgment, when all evil will be punished; and certain individuals who will serve as witnesses, along with certain persons or things that will be the subjects of the testimony. The stars of the zodiac, as well as those of other constellations, are compared to the eyes of the night. While crimes may occur in the darkness, countless eyes are constantly watching, and every wrongdoer will be held accountable.
