Woe to those that deal in fraud,-
The term “fraud” should be understood in a broad sense. It encompasses actions such as giving short measure or short weight, but it goes beyond that. The next two verses clarify that it is the spirit of injustice that is condemned—giving too little and demanding too much. This can be seen in commercial transactions, where an individual demands a higher standard in his favor than he is willing to concede when the situation is reversed. In domestic or social contexts, a person or group may demand honor, respect, or services that they themselves are unwilling to offer in similar circumstances. This is worse than one-sided selfishness; it constitutes double injustice. However, it is most egregious in the realm of religion or spiritual life: how can someone ask for mercy or love from Allah if they are unwilling to extend the same to others? In one sense, this reflects the Golden Rule—”Do as you would be done by”—but it is more fully expressed here. You must give in full what is due from you, regardless of whether you expect or desire the same consideration from others (Ali).
