According to some scholars, there are three stages in the development of the human soul. The first is Ammara (Qur’an 12:53), which is inclined toward evil and, if left unchecked, leads to destruction. The second is Lawwama, as mentioned in this context, where the soul becomes aware of its wrongdoing, resists it, seeks Allah’s grace and forgiveness after repentance, and strives to amend its ways, with the hope of achieving salvation. The third and highest stage is Mutmainna (Qur’an 89:27), when the soul reaches complete peace and satisfaction. The second stage, Lawwama, can be compared to conscience, although in English, conscience is typically viewed as a faculty, not a stage in spiritual development (Ali)..
