O thou folded in garments!
Some commentators interpret Muzzammil to mean “properly dressed for prayer” or “wrapped in a sheet, symbolizing renouncement of the vanities of this world.” Muzzammil is one of the titles of the Prophet Muhammad. However, there is a deeper significance in this term, as well as in the address “Thou wrapped up” in the following surah. While human nature requires warm clothing and coverings to protect the body from cold, heat, or rain, such physical wrappings are meaningless in the spiritual realm. In the presence of Allah, the soul must stand bare and open, especially in the silence of the night. However, this spiritual exposure should not be overly austere, as the subsequent verses indicate (Ali, n.d.).
