(Some part is due) to the indigent Muhajirs, those who were expelled from their homes and their

property, while seeking Grace from Allah and (His) Good Pleasure, and aiding Allah and His

Messenger: such are indeed the sincere ones:-

 

59:9

But those who before them, had homes (in Medina) and had adopted the Faith,- show their affection to such as came to them for refuge, and entertain no desire in their hearts for things given to the (latter), but give them preference over themselves, even though poverty was their (own lot). And those saved from the covetousness of their own souls,- they are the ones that achieve prosperity.

 

This refers to the Ansār (the Helpers), the people of Madinah who embraced Islam during its early persecution in Makkah and extended an invitation to the Prophet Muhammad to join them and serve as their leader in Madinah. The Hijrah (migration) was made possible due to the Ansār’s generosity and hospitality, as they welcomed the Prophet and all the Muhājirūn (emigrants) who accompanied him. Remarkable bonds of brotherhood were formed between individual members of the two groups. During the early stages, when the Muslim community lacked sufficient resources, the Ansār regularly gave, and the Muhājirūn received. The Ansār viewed it as an honor to host the refugees, and even the poorest among them competed with the wealthier members in their selflessness and generosity. When the land and property of the Banū Naḍīr were redistributed, the largest portion was allocated to the Muhājirūn, yet the Ansār harbored no envy. Instead, they celebrated the prosperity of their brethren, and in doing so, they were also relieved of some of the burden and responsibility that came with providing for the newcomers (Ali, n.d.).
