Strongest among men in enmity to the believers wilt thou find the Jews and Pagans; and nearest among them in love to the believers wilt thou find those who say, “We are hristians”: because amongst these are men devoted to learning and men who have renounced the world, and they are not arrogant.
According to Maariful Quran,
Classical commentators explain that the verse praising certain Christians refers to a specific group characterized by sincerity, humility, and devotion to truth. According to this interpretation, the praise may include individuals such as the Ethiopian ruler al-Najāshī (the Negus), along with his officials and subjects, as well as other Christians who demonstrated similar qualities in different times and places. These individuals were described as being receptive to truth and inclined toward righteousness. However, commentators emphasize that this commendation does not imply that all Christians, regardless of their beliefs or conduct, are to be regarded as allies or close associates of Muslims without distinction.
Imām Abū Bakr al-Jassās, in his work Aḥkām al-Qurʾān, cautions against interpreting the verse as a general or absolute endorsement of all Christians or as implying that they are categorically superior to Jews. He argues that such a conclusion overlooks the broader theological differences and historical contexts addressed in Islamic discourse. At the same time, scholars acknowledge that among Christian communities there have been individuals known for their sincerity, humility, and openness to truth. In some cases, these qualities led them to accept Islam and join the Muslim community.
The Qurʾān itself explains the reason for praising this particular group, stating that among them were priests and monks who were not arrogant and who were therefore more willing to listen and reflect upon divine guidance (Qurʾān 5:82). Commentators interpret this description as highlighting humility and spiritual devotion as factors that enabled some individuals to recognize and respond positively to the message of Islam. The verse thus distinguishes between communities and individuals based on their attitudes toward truth, emphasizing that moral and spiritual qualities—such as humility and sincerity—play a central role in determining how people respond to divine guidance.
