Allah has indeed heard (and accepted) the statement of the woman who pleads with thee concerning her husband and carries her complaint (in prayer) to Allah: and Allah (always) hears the arguments between both sides among you: for Allah hears and sees (all things)..
The verse is understood to have been revealed in connection with the case of Khawlah bint Thaʿlabah, the wife of Aws ibn al-Ṣāmit. According to historical reports, Aws pronounced the formula of ẓihār, an ancient pre-Islamic custom in which a husband declared to his wife, “You are to me like the back of my mother.” In the customary practice of the time, this statement was treated as a form of divorce that released the husband from marital responsibilities while leaving the woman in a difficult and uncertain position. Such a practice was widely regarded as unjust and degrading toward women (Ali.).
Khawlah, however, appealed to the Prophet Muhammad, explaining her situation and emphasizing that she had young children and no independent means of supporting them. She also prayed to God for justice in her case. Her appeal was ultimately accepted, and the Qur’ānic revelation addressed the issue directly, condemning the practice of ẓihār as an invalid and unjust statement. As a result, the pre-Islamic custom was abolished, and clear regulations were established to prevent such harm to women and families (Ali).
