O ye who believe! If a wicked person comes to you with any news, ascertain the truth, lest ye harm people unwittingly, and afterwards become full of repentance for what ye have done
Classical interpretations emphasize that reports or rumors—especially those originating from unknown or unreliable individuals—should be carefully verified before being accepted or transmitted. Believers are advised to investigate such information to determine its accuracy, as spreading unverified claims may cause significant harm and later lead to regret. Within this ethical framework, gossip, slander, and all forms of defamatory speech are strongly condemned. Particular attention is given to accusations involving personal honor, especially those directed toward women, which are specifically denounced in passages such as 24:11–20 and 24:23–26 of the Qur’an.
