And among them are men who listen to thee, but in the end, when they go out from thee, they say to those who have received Knowledge, “What is it he said just then?” Such are men whose hearts Allah has sealed, and who follow their own lusts.
Classical exegetical discussions describe a situation in which certain hypocrites attended the gatherings of the Muslim community in Medina where Muhammad delivered teachings and sermons. Although they outwardly appeared to listen attentively, their intention was not to learn or internalize the moral and spiritual guidance being conveyed. Instead, their presence was motivated by criticism and fault-finding regarding what they observed and heard.
According to this interpretation, after leaving these assemblies, they retained little understanding of the teachings presented. Rather than reflecting on the message, they posed trivial or misguided questions that could generate doubt or confusion among others. This behavior is described in classical commentary on the Qur’an as an example of hypocrisy, where outward participation in religious gatherings conceals an inner lack of sincerity or commitment to the ethical and spiritual principles being taught.
