There was, for Saba, aforetime, a Sign in their home-land – two Gardens to the right and to the left. “Eat of the Sustenance (provided) by your Lord, and be grateful to Him: a territory fair and happy, and a Lord Oft-Forgiving!
The location referenced here corresponds to the same region in Yemen mentioned in Qurʾān 27:22, which relates to the period of the Prophet Solomon and Queen Bilqīs. The present reference, however, describes the region several centuries later. During this later period, the area continued to be prosperous and well-developed, benefiting significantly from the irrigation provided by the Maʾrib Dam. Historical descriptions indicate that the roads—or possibly irrigation canals—were lined with gardens on both sides, creating a landscape in which cultivated areas appeared continuously on the right and left. The region was known for producing fruits, spices, and frankincense, and its agricultural abundance contributed to its reputation in classical sources as “Arabia Felix,” or “Arabia the Blessed.”
