33:59-62
O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when abroad): that is most convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not molested. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (59) Truly, if the Hypocrites, and those in whose hearts is a disease, and those who stir up sedition in the City, desist not, We shall certainly stir thee up against them: Then will they not be able to stay in it as thy neighbours for any length of time (60) They shall have a curse on them: whenever they are found, they shall be seized and slain(without mercy). (61) (Such was) the practice (approved) of Allah among those who lived aforetime: No change wilt thou find in the practice (approved) of Allah (62)
Commentary
The cited passage explains that Qur’anic verses addressing social conduct emphasize that harming any Muslim is a grave sin, and causing harm to the Prophet is considered an act of disbelief deserving divine condemnation. According to classical tafsīr, the verses also responded to misconduct by hypocrites who harassed Muslim women in public spaces. Instructions concerning ḥijāb required believing women to draw their outer garments (jalābīb) closely over themselves when outside the home in order to maintain modesty and reduce harassment, while also reflecting the social conditions of the time in which distinctions existed between free women and bondwomen. Early exegetes such as Ibn Masʿūd and Ibn ʿAbbās interpreted the command “to draw close” (yudnīna) as bringing a long covering from the head over the face. The commentary further clarifies that Islamic law aims to protect the dignity and honor of all women and condemns rumor-spreading or actions that create social harm. In addition, the verses warn hypocrites that persistent hostility toward the Muslim community could lead to severe legal consequences, which classical jurists later discussed in relation to apostasy and public treachery within the framework of Islamic jurisprudence (Ibn Kathīr, n.d.).
