Behold! a woman of ’Imran said: “O my Lord! I do dedicate unto Thee what is in my womb for Thy special service: So accept this of me: For Thou hearest and knowest all things.”

3:36

When she was delivered, she said: “O my Lord! Behold! I am delivered of a female child!”- and Allah knew best what she brought forth- “And no wise is the male Like the female. I have named her Mary, and I commend her and her offspring to Thy protection from the Evil One, the Rejected.”

According to Maariful Qur’an, earlier religious traditions included a form of devotion in which a child could be dedicated entirely to the service of God and relieved from ordinary worldly responsibilities. In this context, the mother of Mary (Maryam) made a vow during her pregnancy that her child would be devoted to serving Bayt al-Maqdis (the Sacred Sanctuary) and would not be engaged in worldly duties. She had expected to give birth to a son, assuming that such service would traditionally be performed by a male child. However, when she gave birth to a daughter, she initially felt concern about whether the vow could be fulfilled. Despite this, God accepted the sincerity of her dedication and honored Mary with a unique and elevated status among women (Shafi, 2008, p. 63).Narrated Sa‘id bin Al-Musaiyab:

Abu Huraira said, “The Prophet (S) said, ’No child is born but that, Satan touches it when it is born whereupon it starts crying loudly because of being touched by Satan, except Mary and her son.” Abu

Huraira then said, “Recite, if you wish: “And I seek Refuge with You (Allah) for her and her offspring from Satan, the outcast.” (3.36)
