And who does more wrong than he who invents a lie against Allah or rejects the Truth when it reaches
him? Is there not a home in Hell for those who reject Faith?
29:69
And those who strive in Our (cause),- We will certainly guide them to our Paths: For verily Allah is with those who do right. (And those who strive in Our way We will certainly take them to Our paths – 69).
The concept of jihad in Islamic thought is often understood as exerting effort in the path of faith and righteousness. This effort may involve confronting external obstacles, including opposition from those who reject the faith, as well as internal struggles arising from personal desires and the influence of evil. Within this broader understanding, physical struggle or conflict may represent one form of effort, but spiritual and moral struggles against one’s own shortcomings are also considered significant aspects of jihad. The verse associated with this concept promises that God will guide those who strive sincerely in His cause toward the right path. In situations where individuals face uncertainty or difficulty in distinguishing between truth and falsehood, virtue and wrongdoing, or benefit and harm, divine guidance is believed to assist those who sincerely seek to act in accordance with faith.
Classical scholars have also connected this verse with the relationship between knowledge and action. Abū al-Dardāʾ is reported to have interpreted the verse as indicating that individuals who strive to act according to the knowledge they already possess will be granted further understanding by God. Similarly, Fudayl ibn ʿIyāḍ offered another interpretation, suggesting that those who exert effort in the pursuit of knowledge will find that God facilitates their ability to act upon what they learn (as cited in al-Maẓharī). These interpretations highlight the principle that sincere effort in both learning and practice leads to greater spiritual insight and moral guidance.
