They say: “If we were to follow the guidance with thee, we should be snatched away from our land.” Have We not established for them a secure sanctuary, to which are brought as tribute fruits of all kinds,- a provision from Ourselves? but most of them understand not.
Some members of the Quraysh reportedly acknowledged the truth of Islam but expressed concern that if they abandoned the traditions of their people, they might lose their influence over their land and be displaced by others. In response, commentators have interpreted the Qurʾānic message in both a literal and a symbolic sense. In its literal sense, the argument emphasizes that the sanctuary of Makkah remains secure and honored because of the protection granted by God. Therefore, adherence to divine guidance would strengthen the community rather than weaken it.
On a deeper symbolic level, Makkah may be understood as representing a spiritual stronghold or center of moral security. In this interpretation, the outcomes of human actions ultimately return to and are measured by spiritual well-being. From this perspective, reliance on God provides true stability and strength. Consequently, the more individuals seek closeness to God and align themselves with divine guidance, the more secure they become within this spiritual “fortress.”
