So when she arrived, she was asked, “Is this thy throne?” She said, “It was just like this; and knowledge was bestowed on us in advance of this, and we have submitted to Allah (in Islam).”
The Qur’anic narrative concerning Queen Bilqīs concludes with the statement that she submitted to God alongside Prophet Solomon (Sulaiman, peace be upon him). Beyond this declaration of faith, the Qur’an provides no further details about subsequent events in her life. For this reason, when ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUyaynah was asked whether Solomon later married Bilqīs, he reportedly responded by referring to the Qur’anic statement in which she declares, “I submit, together with Solomon, to Allah, the Lord of the worlds” (Qurʾān 27:44). His response implied that since the Qur’an does not provide additional information, it is not appropriate to speculate further on the matter.
Nevertheless, later historical and exegetical traditions contain additional reports. Ibn ʿAsākir narrates, on the authority of ʿIkrimah, that Solomon is said to have married Bilqīs after her conversion. According to this account, she continued to rule as the sovereign of her land and was subsequently sent back to Yemen. It is further reported that Solomon visited her periodically, and that he commissioned the construction of several palaces for her in Yemen, distinguished for their exceptional design.
