And the Poets,- It is those straying in Evil, who follow them:
Contrary to the claims of certain puritanical interpretations, Islam does not prohibit poetry. Historical reports indicate that the Prophet Muhammad himself cited verses from poets such as Labīd and Abū al-ʿAlāʾ with approval. Islamic tradition further records that he stated, “Poetry is a form of expression: if its content is good and beneficial, it is good; but if it promotes sin, it is blameworthy” (as cited in Fatḥ al-Bārī). In another narration, the Prophet remarked that “some poetry contains wisdom, while some speech can have an effect similar to magic” (as cited in Abu Laylah, In Pursuit of Virtue). These statements illustrate that the ethical value of poetry in Islam depends on its content and moral purpose rather than on the medium itself.
