Then were they confounded with shame: (they said), “Thou knowest full well that these (idols)do not speak!”

 

The expression is rendered literally as “they were turned down on their heads,” which commentators interpret as a metaphorical reversal. After briefly experiencing shame and doubt regarding their practice of idolatry, they quickly recovered from this moment of reflection and returned to their previous stance, preparing to continue their argument with the young Abraham.
