He said: “Nay, this was done by – this is their biggest one! ask them, if they can speak

intelligently!”

So they turned to themselves and said, “Surely ye are the ones in the wrong!”

Commentators explain that Abraham’s ironic response deeply unsettled the idol worshippers. Confronted with the logic of his argument, they turned to one another in reflection, and some among them recognized the strength of his reasoning. These individuals acknowledged that it was futile to argue against Abraham, and for a moment the group lowered their heads in embarrassment. However, they soon attempted to counter his argument by responding literally, stating that the idols were incapable of speaking. This admission, however, served to reinforce Abraham’s point, as it demonstrated the inability of the idols to possess intelligence or divine power, thereby enabling Abraham to present the decisive argument against idolatry
