They said, “Art thou the one that did this with our gods, O Abraham?”
Commentators explain that when Abraham was questioned about the destruction of the idols, the inquiry was presented as a formal accusation, since he had previously declared his intention to confront them. Witnesses who had heard his earlier statements were present when the question was asked. In response, Abraham used an ironic argument to challenge the idol worshippers. He suggested that they should ask the idols themselves, implying that perhaps the largest idol had destroyed the smaller ones in a dispute. Through this response, Abraham exposed the inconsistency of their beliefs: if the idols were incapable of answering, it demonstrated that they lacked intelligence and therefore could not possess divine power. This line of reasoning is further developed in Qurʾān 21:64–67. While the idol worshippers initially mocked Abraham’s seriousness, his act functioned as a deliberate rhetorical strategy that simultaneously challenged their beliefs and affirmed the truth of monotheism
