If it had been Our wish to take (just) a pastime, We should surely have taken it from the things nearest to Us, if We would do (such a thing)!
Commentators explain that the phrase “if We had willed to do so” indicates that, had God desired to engage in any form of pastime, He would have had no need to create the universe for that purpose. Being omnipotent and entirely self-sufficient, God would have found such fulfillment within His own being. The passage therefore emphasizes that creation is not the result of any need or desire for amusement. Rather, through its concise and elliptical style, the Qurʾān affirms the absolute transcendence of God and the impossibility of attributing human-like motives to the divine will
