Set forth to them the similitude of the life of this world: It is like the rain which we send down from the skies: the earth’s vegetation absorbs it, but soon it becomes dry stubble, which the winds do scatter: it is (only) Allah who prevails over all things.
According to Ibn ʿAbbās, the verse instructs that the life of this world should be explained to the people of Makkah through the example of rain sent down from the sky. The rain nourishes the vegetation of the earth, which flourishes for a time as the water mingles with it; however, it eventually dries and becomes scattered fragments carried away by the wind, leaving nothing behind. In the same manner, the life of this world is temporary and its adornments will ultimately disappear. God, who has power over all things, is fully able to cause the worldly life to pass away while establishing the permanence of the Hereafter (Ibn ʿAbbās, as cited in the original text)
