Those whom they call upon do desire (for themselves) means of access to their Lord, – even those who are nearest: they hope for His Mercy and fear His Wrath: for the Wrath of thy Lord is something to take heed of.
Many commentators explain that this verse refers not only to pagan idols but also to revered figures such as Jesus, Mary, Ezra, and other righteous individuals whom later followers elevated to divine or semi-divine status. The verse emphasizes that even those figures who were regarded as gods or god-like beings are themselves servants of God, striving to draw nearer to Him. Thus, the passage highlights that all such individuals remain dependent upon God and cannot possess divinity in their own right
