And from the fruit of the date-palm and the vine, ye get out wholesome drink and food: behold, in this also is a sign for those who are wise.
The date palm and the vine are sources of a variety of beneficial foods and beverages. From these plants, people obtain products such as non-alcoholic drinks derived from dates and grapes, as well as items like vinegar, date sugar, grape sugar, and the fruits themselves for consumption. These products illustrate the diverse forms of nourishment that can be derived from these plants.
The term sakar mentioned in the verse has been interpreted by some commentators as referring to fermented beverages. If understood in this sense, the reference would relate to a period before intoxicants were formally prohibited in Islamic law, as the passage belongs to a Makkan sūrah while the prohibition was revealed later in Madinah. Within this interpretation, the mention of such substances may suggest an early stage in the gradual process that eventually led to the complete prohibition of intoxicants. Some commentators view this as a subtle indication discouraging their use, representing one of several steps that culminated in the later legal ruling against intoxicating drinks.
