Remember Abraham said: “O my Lord! make this city one of peace and security: and preserveme and my sons from worshipping idols.
In the preceding verses (Qurʾān 14:32–35), an appeal is made to the Quraysh to express gratitude to God for the many blessings granted to humanity in general. In the subsequent passage, however, the appeal is directed more specifically to the Quraysh themselves, emphasizing the particular favors that God had bestowed upon their community. The text reminds them that the Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) settled their ancestors in the vicinity of the Kaʿbah and prayed that their city, Makkah, would become a place of peace and security. According to this interpretation, the prosperity and stability experienced by the Quraysh are presented as a response to Abraham’s supplication. Consequently, they are urged to reflect upon these blessings and reform their conduct in accordance with gratitude and moral responsibility.
