Master of the Day of Judgment.
According to Al-Tafsīr al-Kabīr, al-Rāzī presents the human condition as a spiritual journey in which life resembles travel toward the Hereafter, with time measured through years, months, and even breaths as progressive steps toward eternal destiny. Observing the signs and wonders of creation is intended to direct the believer’s reflection toward the greater realities and rewards of the next life. Within this framework, the title “Master of the Day of Judgment” encompasses all matters related to resurrection and accountability, which al-Rāzī classifies into two broad domains. The first consists of intellectual inquiries grounded in rational reflection, such as the possibility of cosmic annihilation and recreation, the persistence of the soul beyond the body, and the causes of spiritual felicity or misery—topics he suggests could amount to hundreds of complex discussions. The second consists of transmitted teachings (samʿiyyāt), including the signs preceding the Day of Judgment, the cosmic events marking its commencement, and the processes of gathering, judgment, and final recompense in Paradise or the Fire. Collectively, these rational and transmitted subjects form an extensive body of theological investigation that falls under the concept of divine judgment (al-Rāzī, Al-Tafsīr al-Kabīr, Vol. 1, pp. 7–8).
